A/N: Yes, I know it's January, and this was for a September event. What're you going to do about it?

Why did Fourth of July bathroom floor talks become a thing?
The first one, Steve got. There were extenuating circumstances. The Russians, truth drugs, a bunch of stuff with the Upside Down. They just happened to end up in the movie theater bathroom and had a deep talk.
Then last Fourth of July, that was… understandable. Twice does not make a habit. Eddie was slowly on the road to recovery after the events in March with Vecna, and Steve, after being in close prolonged contact with him for a few months as he helped him with his recovery, came to the realization that maybe he had feelings for him.
It didn’t help that he’d been drinking a bit that night. He’d dragged Robin into the master bath and spilled it all to her then and there. Then puked into the bathtub a bit. (He’d unfortunately been on the opposite side of the room from the toilet. He hadn’t enjoyed cleaning that up the next morning.)
Well, he’d gotten that sorted out in his mind. Which meant he and Robin started branching out into the Indianapolis queer scene. Which meant he got introduced to a number of people with identities that he didn’t even know were options.
Which led to him sitting with Robin on the floor of the grimy bathroom at the gay bar during their Fourth of July drag show, not knowing how to feel about anything.
“Robs,” he mumbled into her shoulder.
“You ready to talk about what had you dragging me in here in the middle of the set?” she asked him gently, rubbing his back.
A giggling couple spilled through the door into the bathroom, but once they spotted the two of them sitting there, Steve looking like a sad puppy, they headed right back out the door awkwardly.
“I don’t think I’m a boy,” he quietly confessed into Robin’s hair.
It felt like a weight lifted from his shoulders.
“Do you think you’re a girl? Or something else? Neither?” she asked him. Her tone was so soft and loving that he felt like crying.
“I don’t know,” he said. “I was trying not to think about it for a while there.”
“Let’s swap then!” she said brightly. “You can have my pronouns for a bit, try them on for size. And I’ll take yours.”
“Okay,” he – she – said with a smile.
“Well, then, Miss Stevie. Are you feeling up to going back out now? I think Eddie thinks there was something seriously wrong when you peeled us out of there,” he said.
“Let’s go, Mr. Buckley,” she said, standing and offering a hand out to Robin.
